This Chapter starts of by proclaiming how in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Lord had life within him and that life was the light of men, the light that shines in the darkness. John was sent to bear witness of Jesus. Jesus is the true light that gives light into every man coming into the world. Jesus came to his own and they did not receive him. To those who believed and were born of God, they were saved through him.
The chapter then goes into introducing John(The cousin of Jesus) and his conversation with the pharisees who asked him if he is the Christ and he answers them by saying he is not the Christ but rather the person preparing the way for the Christ. After this conversation John later goes on to see Jesus and baptize him he calls Jesus “The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” and says he saw his spirit descending from heaven like a dove and he remained upon him. John then hears the voice of the father testifying that this is the son of God. Johns two disciples then go to Jesus and ask if they can follow him.
The rest of the verses introduce us to the other disciples and how Jesus met them.
-“The law was given through Moses, but Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”- Verse 17
Jesus and his disciples are at a wedding in Cana of Galilee, it’s at this wedding that Mary(His mother) asks him to help the wedding by performing a miracle. Jesus then turns the water into wine and the master of the feast is incredibly happy. This was the beginning of the signs Jesus would go on to do.
Jesus the goes to Jerusalem for the pass over and during this time he visits the temple. When he visits the temple he sees people selling open, sheep, doves and the moneychangers doing business, he then overturns the tables and says to them “Take these things away! Do not make my Fathers house a house of merchandise”.
Jesus says to the disciples if they bring the temple down he will rebuild it in 3 days and they remember that after he rose from the dead and believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
Scripture often invites us to see things from more than one perspective. Let’s take a moment to consider how different people in the story might have felt, and how their experiences relate to our own.
By exploring both sides, we open ourselves to greater empathy and wisdom. Share your thoughts—there’s no right or wrong answer here, just honest reflection and growth.
Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
-Jesus and his disciples go to Samaria and before they enter the town he stops by a well while the disciples are waiting for him in the city. At this well he meets a woman who is infamous in the city for having multiple husbands(5 to be exact). He reveals to this woman that he is the christ and she believes him after he tells her everything about her.She then runs into town and lets others know that the Messiah has arrived. Many of the Samaritans believe her and he stayed in their city for two days before going to Galilee.
-Jesus tells his disciples that his food is to do the will of him to sent him and to accomplish his work.
Jesus heals an officials son
-In this story Jesus heals an officials son without physically being there and this was possible because of the father’s faith.
The healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
-Jesus heals a man on the sabbath and this is the first instance where we see Jesus ask the person if they want to be healed rather than them asking him. When the man tells the jews that he healed him on the sabbath and the jews find that as a reason to persecute him.
Jesus is Equal with God
-The jews are making claims that Jesus is claiming to be equal with God because he calls him his father.
-“These people are hater’s.”-@Yvan
The Authority of the son
-In this Jesus responds to them by saying that everything he does is Gods will just as the son does the will of the father. He also tells them to honor the son just as how they honor the father. Jesus also tells them that there’s gonna be a time when the “dead” hear the voice of the son of God and those who choose to hear will live.
-John 5:27
Witnesses to Jesus
-Jesus tells them that he can’t do anything by himself, and he only does the will of him who sent him which is why he is able to do what.He also tells them that if they read their BIBLE they would know that he is the messiah because it is written and he has fulfilled all that was said but they choose to find glory in one another and not in God.
-“He’s not just here to talk about the right now but rather his testimony is infinite and is going to be used forever”-@Nelly
-“Jesus goes on to say people do have his word abiding in him because they don’t believe in God and they keep searching through the scripture to find God even thought he’s right in front of them”.-“Yvan

-This miracle is mentioned once again and in this miracle he turns a little to a lot. We can use this miracle as an example to never put limits on God’s power because he can turn what seem’s to be little into more than we could ever imagine.
Jesus walks on water
-Jesus walks on water.
I am the bread of life
-John 6:27
-John 6:53
Jesus is verse 26 that they are not seeking him because they saw him perform miracles but because he is feeding them “bread”. And he tells them not seek food that perishes but rather food that endures eternal life which he will give to them. Jesus tells them that to do the work of the father all they have to do is believe in who he sent(Jesus). The Jews start saying he couldn’t have come from heaven because he came from Mary and Joseph. The people who knew of Jesus were drawed him by God.The jews said “How can this man give us flesh to eat.” This is them trying very hard to discredit what Jesus says. Jesus’s followers were struggling with what he was mentioning about him being the bread of life and how you must eat his flesh and drink his blood because they think he is being literal but he is talking about the spirit. He also says that no one can go to Jesus unless it granted by the father. After that many of the turned back and no longer walked with him after he said that and he turned to the 12 disciples and asked them if they want to go as well. He also tells them how one of them is a devil.
-“Seek Jesus not just for what he can do for us but for eternal life.”-Denise
Summary: the story of Jesus traveling to Jerusalem for the Feast of Booths, a major Jewish festival. At first, His brothers, who did not yet believe in Him, urged Him to go publicly and show His miracles, but Jesus refused, saying His time had not yet come. He later went in secret. As Jesus began teaching in the temple, people were amazed by His wisdom, wondering how He knew so much without formal education. Some questioned if He was truly the Messiah, while others doubted because they thought the Messiah would come in a mysterious way, not from a known place like Nazareth. Jesus responded, saying His teachings were from God, not Himself, and that those who seek the truth will recognize it.Tension grew as religious leaders sought to arrest Him, but they hesitated because of the crowd's support. Some people believed in Him, seeing His miracles as proof, while others accused Him of deceiving the people. Jesus spoke about living water, saying that those who believe in Him will have rivers of living water flowing from within them, referring to the Holy Spirit, which would be given later. Division arose among the people. Some wanted to seize Him, but the temple guards, impressed by His words, returned to the Pharisees empty-handed. Nicodemus, a Pharisee who had previously visited Jesus at night, cautiously defended Him, questioning whether it was right to judge Him without a fair hearing. However, the other leaders dismissed his concerns, unwilling to believe that anything good could come from Galilee. The growing divide between those who believed in Jesus and those who rejected Him, setting the stage for the escalating conflict that would eventually lead to His crucifixion.
-“So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.” John 7:30 ~Sam’s fav
-“You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.””
John 7:34 ~Hyguette, this is very literal
Summary: the story of a woman caught in adultery. The Pharisees bring her to Jesus, hoping to trap Him, but He responds by saying, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” One by one, they leave, and Jesus tells the woman He does not condemn her but instructs her to “go, and from now on sin no more.”
Later, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world.” The Pharisees challenge Him, but He tells them that His testimony is true because He comes from the Father. He warns them that unless they believe in Him, they will die in their sins. He also speaks of His coming death, saying, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He.”
Jesus teaches about true freedom, saying, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” He rebukes the religious leaders, telling them that they are not truly children of Abraham because they seek to kill Him. Instead, He says they follow the devil, who is the father of lies.
We end the chapter with Jesus making a powerful claim: “Before Abraham was, I am.” This statement declares His divinity, echoing God’s name in Exodus. The crowd, furious at this, picks up stones to kill Him, but Jesus slips away.
Summary:Jesus . Jesus encountered a man who had been blind from birth. The disciples asked him if the man became blind because of him or his parents sins. Jesus goes on to say that it wasn’t because of him or his sins that he was born blind, but it was simply so that the works of God may be displayed in him. Jesus states again in verse 5 that as long as he is in the world, he is the light of the world. He then healed the blind man using his spit and mud. When the pharisees saw this man, Some of them said that Jesus isn’t from God because he didn’t keep the sabbath. But the other pharisees were wondering how can a sinner do such signs?. They went on to cast him out. When Jesus heard they cast him out. He went and revealed himself as the Son of Man.
-John 9:39
Jesus says the only way to heaven is through him. Anyone who came before him is a thief and robber because their works do align with God’s will. He calls himself the good shepherd. He’s the good shepherd because the good shepherd lays his life down for the sheep. You can see Jesus is slowly diving people because some are defending Jesus and some are saying he has a demon.
Jesus goes on to say. If the lord calls you one of his children, No one can take it away.
-Verse 18
In this Chapter we learn how Lazarus of Bethany fell sick and the sisters of Lazarus went to tell Jesus that he whom you love is sick. After hearing them Jesus says to the sisters that his sickness is not meant for death but to show the glory of God. So Jesus stayed where he was for two days then made his way to Judea which was a dangerous journey because the Jews there wanted to stone him. Jesus then goes on to tell the disciples that Lazarus has “fell asleep” and they are confused by this statement because to the Lazarus is “dead”.
When Jesus arrived in Bethany he is met by Martha who showcases a lot of faith in Jesus and says that if he had been there then Lazarus would still be alive. Her sister Mary then runs to Jesus and says the same thing but this time when Jesus see’s her he groaned in spirit and was troubled. Before Jesus raises his from the dead he says to the Father “Father, I thank you that you have heard me”.
The Pharisees who were there became troubled by this miracle and thought that if they leave him then everyone will believe in him and the Romans will take their place and nation. One of them even prophesies that Jesus would die for all the nations. From that day they planned to put him to death. They then put out a report that if anyone knew where he was was , they should report it so they could seize him.
-“When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.”-Verse 4
-“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; “-Verse 25
6 days before the passover Jesus went back to Bethany to Lazarus’s house and they made him a supper. On that day Mary took a pound of very costly oil and washed his feet and even wiped it with her hair. Then Judas said why was this oil not sold for three hundred Denarii and given to the poor. He did not say this because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief. Jesus then says to let her be because she prepared this for his arrival and that the poor they will always have but Jesus they will not.
Many of the Jews went to see them to see if Lazarus was truly raised from the dead and while that was going on the chief priest plotted to put Lazarus to death. After seeing Lazarus many of the Jews went home believing he was the son of God. When people heard Jesus was entering Jerusalem they cried out Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the Lord’s name. When people asked to see Jesus he said “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.” He then goes on to tell them about his sacrifice for all and how him who loves his life will lose it and he who hates his life will keep it. Jesus then says a prayer to the father to glorify his name and the father says “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
The people are confused they have heard that the Son of Man lives forever and now Jesus is saying the Son of Man must be lifted up. A lot of them believed in him but did not confess it because they were scared of the Pharisees “ for they loved human praise more than praise from God.”
Jesus did not come to judge the world but to save it. He who hears his words and does not believe then will be judged by that same word, because Jesus has not spoken on his own authority but on the Father’s authority.
- “And I, when I am lifted up[g] from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.”-Verse 32 and 33
It was the time of the passover and Jesus knew that his hour had come, supper had ended and the devil had put it into Judas’s heart to betray Jesus. During this supper Jesus washes the disciples feet and tells them that they do not understand why he is doing this now but later they will. He makes it known that he knows one of them will betray him. He tells them that if he their Lord will wash their feet then they will do the same to each other.
We see how Judas becomes tempted when Satan enters him. Jesus then gives them a new commandment which is to love one another just as he has loved them. And then he also tells Peter that he will deny him three times.
Jesus says in his father’s house there is many rooms. He says that he is the way, the truth and the life and no one can get to the Father except through Him. He tells them that to have seen Jesus is to have seen the Father. It also gives an explanation as to why we say “In Jesus name” after prayer. It also introduces the Holy Spirit to us and how the Holy Spirit is only given to those who receive it. Jesus tells them to rejoice because he is going back to the Father.
-Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”- Verse 21
This chapters starts with Jesus saying how every branch within him that does not bear fruit he takes away, We have been made clean because of the word he has spoken to us, we need to Abide in Jesus and him in us because the branch cannot bear fruit by itself it must abide by the vine. Without him we can’t do anything. If we abide in Jesus and his word is within us the whatever we desire will be done for us.
Jesus calls us his friends wince we know now what the master is doing. We did not choose him but he chose us and appointed us that we should go bear fruit. If the world hates you then know that it hated Him first. The world would love you if you were for it but since you are not of the world it hates you.
Jesus says that if they were not warned and he had not spoken against their sin then they would have no sin. But now they have hated him which means they have hated the Father.
-Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.-Verse 13
Jesus has taught us the truth so that we may not stumble, he tells the disciples that people will try to persecute you because of your faith in him. It was necessary for Jesus to go because the Holy Spirit could not come until Jesus left. When the Holy Spirit comes he will come to convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgement. Jesus then tells them that he is no longer speaking figuratively and is now being literal when he says whatever they say is his name he will give to them.
- “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”-Verse 33
Jesus asked the father to glorify him in his presence. The same glory he had before the world was created. In this prayer God also prays for the people who believed in him. He prayed for them to not fall under the worldly habits. Since he is no longer with them, he prays that they should’t fall under temptation, but instead for the Holy father to guide them and shield with the truth. He also asks God that he may glorify them.
This is the part where Jesus was arrested. When Jesus says he is Jesus of Nazareth they fell to the ground. This just goes to show how much power he has. Jesus also told Peter to put his to put his sword down. This shows that he was accepting his death and that way the prophecy may be fulfilled. In this chapter we also see Peter denying Jesus 3 times and We see Jesus having a conversation with pilate and pilate doesn’t find him guilty, but because of the passover, pilate is required to free one prisoner. The crowd didn’t choose Jesus but they went on to choose Barrabas instead, who is a robber. This was happening exactly how Jesus said it would. He predicted that he wasn’t going to be crucified by the jew but the romans instead.
Jesus Sentenced to be Crucified
-Pilate took Jesus and flogged him and they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head as well as a purple robe and started saying “All hail the king of Jews” and slapped him. Pilate still believed that Jesus had no charges and offered them another chance to free him, but as soon as the chief priests saw Jesus they yelled “Crucify him”. The jewish leaders insisted that he must die because of the law because he claimed to be the Son of God. When pilate heard this he was afraid and asked Jesus where he comes from to which Jesus didn’t answer him. He then said angrily “Don’t you know that I have the power to free you or crucify you”. Jesus tells him that he would not have power if it were not given to him from above and that the one who handed Jesus over to him is guilty of a greater sin. From that point Pilate tried to set him free but the Jewish leaders said that if he releases him then he is no longer a friend of Caesar because anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.
The crucifixion of Jesus
-The soldiers then took charge of Jesus and made him carry his own cross and they crucified him along with two others beside him. Pilate had a sign near him that read Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews. The Jews said to Pilate to write that he claimed to be the king of the jews and not that he was but Pilate answered them saying what I have written I have written. When the soldiers crucified Jesus they split his clothes and cast lots for his garments and this was done to fulfill another prophecy. As Jesus was on the cross he saw him mother and the disciples and he told his mother that the disciples are her sons and he told the disciples that she is their mother.
The death of Jesus
-The when the hour was soon Jesus said “I am thirsty” to which they gave him wine vinegar and after he received the drink Jesus said “It is finished”, and with that he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. And now the jewish leaders were getting prepared for the special sabbath so they decided to get rid of the bodies left on the crosses and they started by breaking the legs of the other two people who were crucified. When they came to Jesus who was already dead they did not break his legs but instead one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and blood and water started flowing out. This was another fulfillment of prophecy that was written in the scripture.
The Burial of Jesus
Joseph of Arimathea then asks Pilate for the body of Jesus, Joseph was a disciple of Jesus but secretly because he was scared of the Jewish leaders. With the help of Nicodemus they took Jesus’s body to a tombstone. Nicodemus brought 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes(That’s a lot of money) and the two of them wrapped Jesus body in the spices and strips of linen. They then played Jesus is a tomb that had never been used before.
The Empty Tomb
On the first day of the week when it was still dark Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been moved. So she went running to Peter and John and said “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don’t know where they have him!” Peter and John ran to the tomb and took a look inside and did not see Jesus but instead saw his clothes folded. At this point they still did not understand that Jesus had to rise up from the dead.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
-After a while of standing outside the tomb Mary Magdalene took a peak back inside and she saw two angels, one at the feet and one at the head of the burial. The angels then asked her why she is crying to which she said ‘They have took my Lord”. After she turned around Jesus appeared in front of her, but she did not recognize him and thought he was the gardener. After saying her name she then recognized him. Jesus then sent her out to tell the rest of the disciples that he has risen.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
-While the disciples were together is a house with the doors locked out of fear for the Jewish leaders Jesus appeared to them and showed them both his hands and side. After this he breathed on them and told them to receive the Holy Spirit. Now they were able to forgive anyone of their sins.
Jesus Appears to Thomas
-The disciples went to tell Thomas of how they saw Jesus but he said that unless he puts his fingers where they stabbed him in the hands and side then he will not believe them. A week later after Thomas had said that Jesus appeared to them and told Thomas “put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” and after that Thomas believed, but Jesus told him “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
-Jesus performed many other signs which were not recorded in the gospel.
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
-Peter,Thomas,Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee and two other disciples all went fishing and during that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning Jesus stood on the shore but they did not recognize him, he then asked if they caught any fish to which they said no and he told them to cast their nets out and after they obeyed their net became full and they knew their Lord had returned.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
-Jesus asks Peter “Do you love me?” 3 times for the 3 times he denied him and after Peter says yes each time Jesus tells him to take care of his sheep. He then tells Peter that as he has grown older not God will clothe him and lead him on.
John writes that Jesus did many other things and the whole world would not have rooms for the books that would be written.
