Paul is telling us in this part to set our hearts on things above and put to death the things of this earth. We need to let go of our sinful ways such as sexual immorality, impurity and evil desires in order to appear with Christ in glory. It says that the wrath of God is coming because of people’s earthly nature and we need to put those things to death.
12-17
And since we let go of our fleshy desires and are Gods chosen people, we need to clothe ourselves with worthy things like compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Paul advises us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts and in verse 16, it shows us that we not only have to let the message of Christ dwell among us, but also preach his good word to everyone. And when we do whatever we do, we have to acknowledge God by doing it all in the name of our savior Jesus and we have to give thanks to him as well.
18-21
Paul gives us roles in our households to better ourselves and to live in harmony with each other. He tells wives to submit to their husbands and husbands to love their wives. And for children to obey their parents because it pleases the Lord. Fathers, he tells them not to cause their children bitterness. If we lived out our lives in the way the Bible teaches us, it would give us more peace and we would be living our lives based on how God called us to be.
22-25
When we work, we should have the mindset that we are working for the Lord and work at it with all our hearts because God is the one we’re serving, not for human masters. And Paul says slaves need to obey their earthly masters in everything regardless of whether they’re watching or not. If we have a task to do, we shouldn’t just do it because we know we are being monitored by whoever’s in charge but instead to do it wholeheartedly just how Paul says we need to do it with sincerity of the heart.
Paul is giving his final greetings in this last chapter of Colossians to Laodicea, which is a city where a church was located. In verse 5, Paul urges us to make the most out of every opportunity with nonbelievers and we should be wise in the way we act toward them. He later on goes further into that in verse 17 when he shows us that we as people of God need to complete the ministry of God which we’ve received in the Lord. We have to go out into the world and preach his good news and continue to devote ourselves to prayer as it has been said in verse 2.
